“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”
—Margaret Mead, American cultural anthropologist
As a 2002 North Canton Hoover High School graduate, I’m proud to have attended a public school. I returned to the North Canton community six years ago and continue to work in the education landscape on a national level. I will bring this passion and experience to the North Canton City School District Board of Education.
As a governing school board, the three primary responsibilities are 1.) policymaking, 2.) Hiring and oversight of the superintendent, and 3.) Hiring and oversight of the treasurer. Board members represent community sentiments and bridge the gap between the district and its residents. While the board of education does not manage day-to-day operations, it does ensure that the policies are in place to reflect the best interest of all stakeholders.
I believe the most mutually beneficial solutions come from honest conversations centered on what is best for students. Collaboration, respect, and listening are critical to those discussions.
Every student should have the equitable opportunity to pursue a high-quality education, explore their aspirations, and have guidance on the path to help them reach that full potential. The needs of teachers and students are constantly evolving, especially since the global pandemic. We as a community must be willing to advocate for our public schools.
Over the last four years, I have spent time in over 40 schools across the country. I have had the privilege to engage with administrators, teachers, and students. Seeing the educational landscape through a variety of lenses has provided me with a unique perspective. I am excited about the opportunity to add my experience and knowledge to the board of education.
Through career and community engagement, I have established leadership experiences that balance passion with a level head, clear communication skills, and the ability to view situations from a micro and macro level. I am committed to listening, engaging, and helping to create sustainable outcomes that continue North Canton City School District’s progress for its present and future.
Commitment to community and creating a better future for our humanity is what inspires me daily. Whether through my work or community roles, I am inspired by doing what I can to make the world a better place for everyone. I believe that an improved trajectory starts with education.
